Beyond Welcome: Reimagining Safety and Inclusion in the Nonprofit Sector
Date: June 27, 2025
Forum: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Gala: 6:00 PM – 11:00 PM
Location: Ortona ArtsHub, 9722 102 St NW, Edmonton, AB T5K 0X4

🌟 Objectives

  • Examine how systemic exclusion and transphobia manifest in nonprofit and community organizations.

  • Learn directly from trans and gender-diverse leaders and survivors of harm.

  • Reflect on current institutional practices and commit to tangible, transformative change.

  • Co-create safer, more inclusive, responsive support systems rooted in dignity, justice, and belonging.

As part of RARICAnow’s Stonewall Canada mandate to protect and amplify the voices of trans and QTBIPOC (Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) communities, we’ve consistently intentionally centered this Community. This work is rooted in stewardship, resistance, Joy and community-led healing.

🔥 Historical Context

Stonewall Canada emerged in response to violent exclusion at the hands of the Edmonton Pride Festival in 2018. During a planning meeting to discuss a list of community demands, organizers called the police on 2-Spirit, Black trans, racialized disabled, trans refugee, and broader QTBIPOC participants. Stonewalling us on the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. We were later locked out in the cold when the meeting was abruptly relocated—an act of erasure and dismissal that mirrored long-standing anti-Blackness and racism within the 2SLGBTQ+ landscape.

2019 following the cancellation of Edmonton Pride due to the board's refusal to be held accountable, our community came together to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising with a grassroots commemoration.

That legacy continued:

  • In 2020, we organized the first Black Trans Lives Matter rallies in response to the killings of George Floyd and Tony McDade—a Black trans man whose death, like so many others, was invisibilized by mainstream media and systemic transphobia.

  • On June 28, 2020, in Edmonton and August 29, 2020, in Calgary, we rallied to address police brutality and gender-based violence.

  • In 2021, we hosted the first International Stonewall Commemoration Symposium, welcoming over 500 attendees worldwide. These gatherings have become a tradition—annual spaces of collective resistance, learning, Joy and visioning.

In case you missed🗣️ 2025 Forum Highlights

This year’s community forum was held on June 27, 2025 with support and collaboration with JohnHumphrey Center for peace and human right, a presentation on Contextualizing Harm in the Nonprofit Sector this was a participatory session unpacking how organizational practices, funding frameworks, and service models may inadvertently reinforce transphobia, erasure, and exclusion, the forum also featuring keynote speaker Ravyn Wngz, and panelists Victor Mukasa, Adebayo C. Katiiti, Anita MamaSnow, D a panel on trans lived experiences and gender-based violence, and courageous conversations about building safety in nonprofit structures as well discussion on Trans March and Edmonton Pride Parade.

Speakers asked:
"What does safety look like for you?"
"How do we shift power, not just policies?"

The CEO of RARICA also presented findings from recent community engagement sessions and shared updates on our advocacy surrounding the Edmonton Pride Festival.

Some of the key takeaways from the Forum highlighted how many organizations receive funding under the banner of 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion, explicitly referencing the "T,(Trans)" yet have no meaningful programming for trans communities. The community called on all institutions, NOT FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATIONS, to establish and honor a Trans Table—not as tokenism, but as a decision-making and leadership space. This was deep; the exploitation of trans identity without corresponding care or commitment remains a pressing concern. And more Education on trans community to the public.

Attendees expressed that this forum felt safer than many spaces they had previously entered, even spiritual spaces like churches. That safety was not incidental. It was intentional, embodied, and community-led.

Beyond Welcome was not just a forum. It was a culturally grounded, radically inclusive, brave space. It was liberating. It was healing. Thank you again, JHCenter, for making this possible.

We listened to and learned directly from trans and gender-diverse leaders and survivors of harm. We moved through stories, wisdom, resistance, art, music, and cultural joy. What we experienced was not just dialogue—it was embodied, anti-oppressive practice in motion.

This is what building safer, more inclusive, and responsive systems looks like—ones rooted not just in policy but also in care, dignity, and collective power.
